How To Fire-Start With AA Battery
Matches and lighters are typically used to start a fire, but there can be times when you don't have anything other than an AA battery and a wire. Know how you can use an AA battery to start a fire and increase your chances of survival during an emergency.
Things You'll Need
AA battery
Wire
Knife
Hold a AA battery upright and peel away about an inch of plastic insulation across the side of the battery at the edge of the negative terminal using a knife or any sharp-edged object. This will expose the edge of the metal covering the negative terminal and the edge of the paper insulation underneath it.
Hold the battery with its negative terminal facing up. Insert the sharp edge of a knife underneath the edge of the paper insulator and pry the insulator and thin piece of metal covering up by about the thickness of your fingernail to provide a gap where you can insert a thin wire.
Bend a staple or other piece of thin wire, about an 1 1/2 inch long, into a U-shape. Insert one end of the staple or wire into the gap that was pried open underneath the paper insulator.
Prepare your tinder or any dry substance that readily takes fire from a spark such as dry paper, dry cloth, steel wool or dried leaves. Have plenty of tinder on hand so your fire will not go out. Take a piece of tinder and use it to press the other end of the staple onto the metal base or negative terminal of the battery. Blow on the tinder lightly once it catches the spark to ignite the fire.
